Lord Sugar heads YouView

Lord Sugar heads YouView

YouView, the much-delayed VOD system for the UK, has Lord (Alan) Sugar as its chairman. YouView, formerly known as Project Canvas, has now launched in the UK.

YouView is backed by the BBC, BT, ITV and Channel 4, Telco Talk Talk, Channel 5 and play-out specialists Arqiva. YouView’s first problem was with the BBC Trust which took more than a year to finally approve the BBC’s involvement (February 2009 to June 2010) now launched 2012.

YouView’s CEO Richard Halton told delegates at the DTG event He said he expected the YouView specification to form the model for similar services in other countries and regions.

Lord Sugar, the no-nonsense star of the BBC’s version of The Apprentice and the man who built Amstrad, replace Kip Meek, the YouView chairman, and has been given the brief of knocking heads together. YouView was budgeted at £115 million(€133.4m) to cover development and launch costs and the first four years of operations.
The YouView Story So Far

The YouView Story So Far

A little while ago, some of the UK’s best-known Broadcasters and Broadband Internet companies got together to talk about TV and how they could make it better.

They agreed that while everyone loves great TV, it’s frustrating when you miss a great show - and it’s never quite the same on a computer. Wouldn’t it be great if you could combine the simplicity and value of Freeview with the choice and convenience of catch-up and on-demand services – all on your own TV?

So they decided to create YouView to do just that - all together in the same set top box with no fuss, no computer and, best of all, no TV contract.

You get all your favourite Freeview or Freesat channels, plus the last seven days’ catch-up TV, and for those who want even more, the choice of on demand and pay TV - like films, sports and US drama.

Our unique programme guide will go back in time, so you can watch shows from last night or last week today. You’ll also be able to search for things by title or even an actor’s name.

And that’s just the beginning.

Because YouView is open, developers can create apps that can make your TV do all sorts of things. And all kinds of providers will be able to put their content on YouView. As YouView develops there’ll be more and more content available from the Internet as well as lots of ways to personalise the way you watch.

All this with no monthly TV subscription. You’ll just need a YouView box and broadband Internet.

Brilliantly simple, and simply brilliant. YouView will be everything TV should be.

How Can I Get A YouView Box Now?

All you’ll need is a YouView set-top box, and broadband Internet. There’s no contract or monthly subscription to sign.

You can order one here (just like Freeview and Freesat boxes) You then just plug in your aerial and your broadband, into the box, and then the box into the TV. (Without the Internet connection, you’ve basically just got a Freeview Recorder box.).

Will I need a new TV? a new dish? or an upgraded aerial?

Will I need a new TV? a new dish? or an upgraded aerial?

If you can already get digital TV, you shouldn’t have any problem getting YouView. If your TV doesn’t get digital, or you need aerial signal boosters to get a digital signal, you’re going to have to upgrade for the digital switchover anyway.

Obviously you’ll need to buy the YouView box itself. But if you’ve already got Freeview or Freesat, your current kit will carry on working just the same, and receive all the services it gets now.
What about accessibility?

What about accessibility?

We want as many people as possible to enjoy YouView. So we’ve worked hard to make sure they can, and have built in some first-class accessibility functions.

We’ve worked with charities like the RNIB, RNID and Mencap to look at the different needs of various audiences, and how we can help. The result is a programme guide that’s both high quality and highly accessible. A result indeed.
